"With vibrant double kiss, our words of sex and spirituality
are always lip to lip : ecstasy, communion, surrender, passion,
mystery, devotion. As St Theresa said, "All the way to heaven
is heaven." In the poetic text of Lesbian Sacred Sexuality, flesh
plumes, the interior castle glistens. Buddha women enkindle
the breath within the breath, warming spine wine, mandala
eyes penetrate. Here, Lesbian camera subjects, unlike
models, open their soft core, teaching how the mind tells
stories, how the body forgives. One question: Just where is
this dark room of photographer Marcelina Martin? A fragrant
cedar forest where lightening struck a rushing mountain
stream, releasing the essence of heavenly fire? To her
anointments of light, I offer salty incense as valleys overflow.

...excerpt from Lesbian Sacred Sexuality by Diane Mariechild and Marcelina Martin

The dominant view of sexuality in our society is anti-erotic. We are constantly overwhelmed by images that reinforce how the physical has been separated from the psychic, emotional, and spiritual connection. Our sense of the grace of sexuality becomes lost.  Restoring the erotic as wholesome is difficult because it has been distorted through power-over interactions, violence as sex, and lust without reverence. To experience dynamic relatedness and to integrate one's sexuality and spirituality are huge contributions to the evolution of life-affirming consciousness.

Mindfulness about our true attitudes towards ourselves and our sexuality is particularly essential for the lesbian community. We have endured many kinds of oppression, but hatred has focused mainly on our sexuality. Most of us have not escaped internalized homophobia. In order to transform these injurious images and feelings, we must ferret out and replace the negative with the life-affirming. By imaging ourselves as whole in our own visual language, we dissolve the prevalent, spurious definitions of our lives.Making contact with the sacred and committing our sexuality to the realm of spiritual practice is the primary focus of Lesbian Sacred Sexuality. We can imbue our lives with love and devotion to the sacred and to wholeness. To experience the interconnectedness of all life, our perception of Eros, or self-preservation, is changed forever. Developing this state of reverence towards all life is a great contribution towards preserving and healing our planet.

For a long time I searched for a book that exemplified the spiritual nature of sexuality between women.I have read many Tantric books, but they have all been directed towards the heterosexual experience. Most extol the ability to balance the feminine and the masculine within the individual, but never point out this integration is easily found within homosexuals. The inherent value of same sex relationships is not an equally explored avenue of Tantric sexuality. When I decided to create Lesbian Sacred Sexuality, I envisioned a book that would allow the reader to go deeply into the connection between sexuality, body, and nature. I thought of the images as an invitation to experience the Sacred. Each person creates a journey towards wholeness.

"Vision", Marcelina Martin 1998

I nestle into the body of our Sacred Earth
The wisdom of marsh and sand enters me
I swim silently through
the dark and winding waters of the Ogeechee
The sky opens to reveal a universe
without time

All this in one moment of touching your body
All this in one moment
of breathing your breath

Suddenly drenched by the Divine
